Brad Imes Interview
Here's a brief interview with
Brad Imes
(6-2) as he prepares to fight Heath
Herring (26-12-1) at UFC 69.
Zewkey: You started MMA training in
Aug. 2004 right? How has your training
changed since then?
Brad: Before I got on the reality show I had never
really sparred before. Now that I'm in Iowa I spar hard with
world class training partners, that's a change. Also, the
intensity is much greater.
Zewkey: Do you have a standard training routine?
Brad: Grapple twice/wk; spar twice/wk; lift 3x/wk;
swim 2x/wk; mitts with boxing coach 3-4x/wk; agilities/plyos
3x/wk; yoga 5x/wk
Zewkey: What do you know about Heath?
Brad: He's well rounded and has a world of
experience.
Zewkey: Are you working on anything in particular for your
fight with him?
Brad: I focusing a great deal on my striking and my
takedowns, obviously.
Zewkey: Are you nervous fighting a guy called "Texas Crazy
Horse" in Texas?
Brad: No, I don't expect for him to have much home
field advantage.
Zewkey: Anything carry over from football to MMA?
Brad: Football, like mma is a contact sport, so
there are things that carry over. But, the most applicable
aspect was the training. Football taught me how to maximize my
bodies athletic potential.
Zewkey: Can you breakdown football parties vs MMA parties?
Brad: Football parties are loaded with drunken
sorority chicks and thick-necked jocks drinking keg beer on ice
and jungle juice. MMA parties are loaded with strippers and
cauliflower-eared jocks drinking vodka and whiskey with ice on
their face.
Zewkey: Now that you're in the UFC, how have your goals
changed?
Brad: World Domination. Ha Ha I'm just serious.
I've always strived to be the
best at whatever I do.
Zewkey: You lost a split decision to Rashad in TUF 2 finals,
does his success give you confidence that you will have a
breakthrough soon?
Brad: It would be a mistake for me to say "Rashad's
doing great, and I almost beat Rashad, so I'm gonna be great."
If I'm gonna be great it'll be because of what I do in the
future, not the past.
Zewkey: Who's the toughest guy you train with, that the
average MMA fan does not know about?
Brad: Ben Rothwell. He's the IFL heavyweight
champ. Probably the best
heavyweight in the world that the casual fan hasn't heard of.
