What's up Doug. I assume your talking No Limit Hold Em? I'm unfamiliar with your skill level so I'll just drop some basic information.

The best thing you can do is to have a good feel for each player. You can accomplish this by catagorizing them.

Loose aggressive
Tight aggressive
Loose weak
Tight weak

Phil Helmuth has a system in his book where he catagorizes players according to Animals. You can check it out here. http://www.poker-strategy.org/default.aspx?tabid=62

Anyhow, I tend to watch for pre-flop play first. I look for how often a player is getting involved in pots and from what positions. How many limped pots are they in, how many raised pots, how many times do they raise themselves, things like that. This is the first part to identifying what type of player they are, tight or loose, and a lot of the time, players are in the middle. By identifying what type of player they are it helps you get a better feel for what they could've had pre-flop and lets you narrow down the number of hands they could be holding. If Player X is tight and he raises the pot from early position, chances are he has a legitimate hand. So when the flop comes 6QA and he bets out half the pot, you can lay down your pocket 9's with a problem knowing that flop hit him.

Now, on the flop there's a few more things to watch for. I watch for how many times the player folds on the flop as well as bets. Whether he limps pre-flop and folds to a bet on the flop, or if he raises pre-flop and folds. If he's constantly limping pre-flop and check folding the flop, if he bets out you know he's holding something. The same thing goes for the turn. How many bullets does this person fire. Is he known for betting the flop and if he gets called firing at the turn as well? If you call him on both does he have a tendency to shut it down at the river?

Overall, watching how many pots they play and how they play them can help you determine what type of player they are. If they play a lot of pots and they're always betting, loose aggressive. If they play few pots and are always betting, tight aggressive. I'm sure you get the picture.

Again, I'm unfamiliar with your skill level so I'm unsure if any of this is helpful. I regularly play NLHE online so anytime you want to talk Poker or need advice or anything I'm around.
