Joe Stevenson moved
from California to Las Vegas to train with Marc Laimon because he wanted
to fight in
the UFC. In 2004 Stevenson retired his 2 championship
belts he held (King of the Cage as well as Gladiator Challenge) and sought
help from instructor Laimon. Joe made the cast of TUF season 2 and while
on the show defeated Marcus Davis and Jason Von Flue, both with 1st round
tapouts. To win the season 2 title, Stevenson defeated Luke Cummo at
the finale 11/5/2005. Joe's UFC debut was his 30th pro MMA fight
in a career that
started back in 1999. In Joe's 2nd pro fight he faced off against Jens
Pulver, and lost via knockout in the 1st round. It was his only fight
so far where he was knocked out and he wasn't even 18 at the time.
Joe Stevenson was
welcomed to the UFC by welterweight Josh Neer in his 1st fight after
the show.
Neer defeated Joe by unanimous
decision and after that fight Stevenson went to a different weight class,
lightweight. His first fight at his new weight class was against the
very tough Yves
Edwards. In what won the fight of the night award, Joe stopped Yves at
the end of round 2 via doctor stoppage. After defeating Yves, Stevenson
went on a good run that got him into a championship match with BJ
Penn.
During
that run he finished Mishima and Guillard, as well as defeating Pellegrino
via unanimous decision. Stevenson's battle with BJ wasnt what he was
hoping for. Joe sustained a cut near his hairline in the first round
and blood
covered
the cage. He was forced to fight more aggressive due to the blood loss
and fear that the fight could be stopped due to the cut. He tapped out
in the 2nd round by rear naked choke. After fighting BJ he has fought
once and bounced back with a win against Gleison Tibau.
